Todai Political Studies is a lecture transcript from the course 'Politics and Today’s World.' This course was offered in the A-semester (second semester) of the 2023 academic year to first-year students at the University of Tokyo's College of Arts and Sciences. Approximately 20 professors and associate professors specializing in political science teach at the University of Tokyo Faculty of Law and are affiliated with the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics or the Graduate School of Public Policy. Of these, 13 professors taught a class within 'Politics and Today’s World’ introducing their current research interests. When I created this course, I told the professors that many students would enroll without previous experience studying political science and that many would go on to study outside the Faculty of Law. The professors were free to decide whether to explain basic concepts in an easy-to-understand way, explain current issues from a specialist's perspective, or introduce the latest debates in their respective fields.

Although this book is based on a single first-year college course, it is not intended to be a "Politics 101" textbook that reviews social studies courses from junior high and high school. It does not explain the structure of political science or provide a study guide for qualifying exams. Todai Political Studies takes a "skim the cream" approach, similar to a gala concert or even a rock festival. Readers can open the pages of the chapters that interest them and read with understanding despite not having read the previous chapters.

Although this book is titled Todai Political Studies, its authors are restricted to those who taught at the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics and the Graduate School of Public Policy in the 2023 academic year. “Todai Political Studies”is a collective term for dozens of political scientists affiliated with various departments of the university, including the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Institute of Social Science, the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, and the Institute for Future Initiatives. The original term therefore has a much broader scope than its namesake book. We, the political scientists at the University of Tokyo, may not be a planetary system orbiting a single star. Instead, we are like a cluster of stars, each with its own color, brightness, and gravity, interacting with each other.

I hope that this book will spark your interest in political science, a field that explores the world through diverse topics and perspectives.
