Originating in the mid-17th century, Sankyoku is a genre of traditional Japanese music.
It brings together three instruments—koto (a thirteen-stringed zither), shamisen (a three-stringed lute), and shakuhachi (an end-blown bamboo flute)—whose interwoven sounds evoke the subtle shifts of nature and the depths of human emotion.
At “An Evening of Sankyoku” on November 6, audiences will be introduced to the distinctive characteristics and timbres of these instruments, accompanied by live performances by young artists active in Japan and abroad.
This concert offers a gentle and accessible introduction to the world of Japanese music, perfect for first-time listeners.
